I feel like I have read a lot of squirrel books this past year: Flora and Ulysses, and Nuts to You are the two most recent ones besides this one, Lucky. I really enjoyed this book, I think I will buy a copy for the library. I also recommend Lucky to students who like Because of Winn Dixie or the One and Only Ivan.
Here is my review:
Hill, Chris. Lucky. 2016. 208pp. $16.99 hc. Scholastic, Inc. 9780545839778
The fantasy animal adventure novel, “Lucky” by Chris Hill, tells the story of a squirrel named Lucky who somehow was taken from his home and dropped into a city park where two opposing groups of squirrel’s live. Lucky looks different than the rest of his squirrel band but he is desperately trying to fit in. In this grand adventure story Lucky and his rival-turned-best friend Nimlet are trying to make it through the training required to be a part of the Squirrel Patrol and Watch (which all males are part of) when they hear of a planned attack from their squirrel enemies, the Northenders. With deep and moving characters, plot twists, intrigue and suspense, this novel has put together all of the pieces to create a memorable animal adventure story. I think students who like animal adventures but are a little young for other epic animal adventures such as the Warriors series or the Guardians of Ga’hoole Series will love this book. Grades 2-6. Recommended. Michelle Bridges, Media Specialist. Sugar Creek Elementary, Fort Mill, South Carolina.
